Purpose
This guidance is designed to help you create effective surveys that are clear, concise, and relevant. By following these steps, you'll collect accurate and reliable data, leading to better response rates and valuable evidence for decision-making.
Objectives
  • Define Clear Objectives: Establish specific goals and outcomes for your survey to ensure it is purposeful and relevant.
  • Identify Your Audience: Determine the target population to make sure your questions are appropriate and meaningful to respondents.
How to Design and Administer Effective Surveys
  • Keep It Concise and Focused: Limit your survey to essential questions, aiming for a completion time of 5-10 minutes.
  • Use Clear Language: Ensure your questions are simple and easy to understand.
  • Frame Questions Neutrally: Avoid bias by framing questions in a neutral manner to prevent leading or influencing responses.
  • Mix Question Formats: Use a variety of question types, such as multiple choice, Likert scale, and open-ended formats, to keep respondents engaged and capture diverse data.
  • Minimize Open-Ended Questions: Reduce the number of open-ended questions to prevent response fatigue.
  • Partner with the Office of Institutional Research (IR): IR can help design surveys that will yield good response rates and provide the reliable, relevant data you need to make sound decisions. IR can work with you to ensure your surveys adhere to best practices in research methodology, and a staff member can even create the survey for you and help you analyze the results. Contact the office to set up a consultation.
Ethical Considerations
  • Ensure Anonymity and Confidentiality: Clearly communicate how data will be protected to build trust and encourage honest responses.
  • Stay Compliant: Make sure your surveys comply with FERPA guidelines, meet IRB requirements, and are conducted ethically.
Implementation
  • Involve Stakeholders: Recognize that stakeholders may have specific questions for certification or departmental requirements. Incorporate these while adhering to best practices.
  • Follow Institutional Survey Policy: Use the established institutional survey policy to guide your survey design and administration.
Data Analysis and Action
  • Analyze Collected Data: Ensure that the results will inform decisions or actions, justifying the effort respondents put into completing the survey.
  • Create a Feedback Loop: Share aggregate survey results with the community when appropriate to demonstrate the impact of their participation.
